ABOUT CARMEN ANDERSON

This practitioner is a West Coast local, tried and true.  Carmen lives, breathes, and plays all over the Pacific Northwest and credits this rugged coast for feeding her sense of adventure, curious disposition, and respect for nature from a very young age.   Carmen lives her life in the pursuit and encouragement of radical self acceptance, radical authenticity, and unconditional positive regard for all those around her. She carries this forward in her counselling practice and strives to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.

In 2007 Carmen moved to Victoria where she attended the University of Victoria and received her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Psychology, and minor in Sociology.  From there she went on to complete her Masters in Counselling from Seattle City University, a program that stressed Response-Based Practice and a healthy respect for agency, dignity, and resilience when navigating the therapeutic process with clients.  Carmen continues this respect in her practice to this day, believing that all individuals are making their best choices to not only survive, but to stay resilient in the face of adversity.

It would be easiest to describe Carmen’s approach to counselling as intersectional. This means that Carmen draws from her extensive theoretical and historical knowledge to piece together an individualized therapy plan for each of her clients based on an entirely collaborative approach.  She makes sure to ask her clients what they want, how they want to feel, and what they would like to get out of therapy and ensures their voices are heard and enthusiastically welcomed into the counselling process.  Carmen is happy to aid in a directive goal-orientated approach to counselling, or a more rhizomatic exploration of self embodiment.  She enjoys engaging in such modalities as Solution-Focused Brief therapy, Narrative/Talk based therapy, Response-Based Practice, and other client focused approaches that lift a person up.  In her therapeutic repertoire, she includes inspiration from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Interpersonal Therapy, as well as Trauma-Informed Practice.

Carmen prides herself in her constant drive to be the best counsellor she can be.  She continues to attend and participate in continuing education and self-examination to ensure she is able to show up effectively for her clients and pursue current best practices in therapy. She has over 10 years working with children, youth, adults, couples, parents, families, and polycules. Historically she has done well working with individuals who have felt judged or misunderstood in other therapeutic settings, those who have traditionally misunderstood diagnoses (such as BPD, OCD, ODD etc), and others struggling to navigate anxiety, depression, relationship, sexuality, gender issues as well. She greatly enjoys being a sounding board for her clients and is forever grateful to be welcomed to join in their therapeutic process.

Should you find you have any questions for this practitioner, her theoretical approach, or are simply curious if she is the right fit for you, please feel free to set up an initial consultation at no cost.  Carmen is definitely looking forward to meeting you.
